New Poll: Women Spending Lots Of Money On Summer Clothes They’ll Never Wear

Millions of dollars worth of shorts, tank tops, and bikinis will never see the light of day according to a new study by Special K. The study found that British women waste the equivalent of $985 million dollars buying summer outfits that are too snug. One in four women are wasting about $100 on ill-fitting clothing.

The study says it’s because women aren’t admitting they’ve gained winter weight and need to buy a bigger size. The study says another reason for women buying smaller sizes than what actually fits their bodies is because they believe it will serve as an incentive to lose weight. And even if they never do lose the weight, 19 percent will wear the clothes anyway. Laura Keay, from Special K said in a news release, “Women do not want to buy a new summer wardrobe because it means they are admitting they cannot fit into last year’s so they either lose weight or feel the squeeze. And this year, unlike others, financial reasons are also a major factor behind Seasonal Wardrobe Syndrome. So it is even more important to be able to wear last year’s clothes.”

Here are some other facts revealed by this study:

  • More than half of all women say they’ll diet to fit into last year’s summer wardrobe rather than buying bigger clothes.
  • Roughly one in four women are too embarrassed to buy a bigger size.
  • Forty-three percent of women lie about their dress size to friends and family members.
