The Causes Of Debt

Many situations and actions can cause debt. In many cases, the causes of debt are obvious, but does everyone who gets into debt go on wild spending sprees? Does everyone in debt lack basic financial skills, or is debt a more complicated and sometimes insidious creature? Could debt really sneak up on anyone? Studying the causes of debt may help you to avoid debt or to stop contributing to it.

Reduction In Income

When your income is suddenly reduced then it is no surprise that you go into some debt or a lot of debt, but is it necessary? This is not to say that your income is reduced to nothing but just that it is reduced. Change can be difficult for many people and when your income changes then many times your life has to change.

Your lifestyle has to change to fit your new income level. It may be a temporary change or it may be change you live with the rest of your life. Either way, not making changes so that your lifestyle fits your income level is one sure way to head right into debt.

Poor Money Management

This one can be the entire cause of debt or can just appear in conjunction with other circumstances. Do you have a budget? Do you know how much money is going where each month? Do you know exactly how much money you have left over each month after you pay your bills?

This may seem like a difficult and certainly an unenviable task, but it must be done. It is not that complicated. You add up all your bills on one side and put your income on the other.

Then you find a way to make the two work together so that you have money left over. Sometimes small changes to your spending can be the steps that march you right out of debt. You need a budget to be sure you are walking in the right direction first.

Medical Expenses

Medical problems can strike anyone at any time, and anyone who has ever has a medical problem for which they required treatment realizes how quickly these expenses can add up. People who are unable to afford medical insurance are more common these days which makes this a growing reason for debt.

Doctors these days go so far as to accept credit cards. This is one way that they can make sure they get paid even if you do not really have the money to pay the bill. There is nothing wrong with them wanting to get paid for doing their job, but this is one area where debt can grow quickly.

Small Savings Or None At All

Many people do not save much or at all. That is unfortunate because a small amount of savings can help to insulate your financial situation when the unexpected happens. You will not immediately have to go into greater debt when you have a problem if you have some money set aside for a rainy day. If you save now you will thank yourself later.

The causes of debt are many and can be combined in almost infinite ways. Understanding these causes can help you to look at your own life to see how they might come to play a role in your movement toward debt or how they might be contributing to your current debt. Then you can make the necessary changes to protect yourself from debt.
