It’s hard to keep that power in check when everything around you calls out to be purchased. Take the cards you have and put them away, or break them up and order new ones later if you require them. Whatever you do, put them far out of your reach and make them inefficient and awkward to access. You want to fight your debt, not cause it.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you can close a credit card account if it becomes an influence on your behavior. Keep in mind that this isn’t always recommended; closing a credit card with a balance can often damage your credit. Instead, just put off closing a credit card until you’ve effectively achieved a zero balance and have maintained it for a certain period of time. Ultimately, you want to know the policies of your card provider and how they affect your credit. You may even get billed for debt losing an account with a balance! Just pay attention to your paperwork and don’t be afraid to call your credit company and ask questions if it’s necessary.

Basically, what credit cards come down to is debt. Avoid credit cards, and you avoid debt. They can be great for building credit, but that’s something you should consider only after clearing your debt first.
