More People Struggling With Credit Card Debt

It appears that an increasing number of Americans are struggling with , having been hard-hit by a perfect storm of economic factors.

The worst housing crisis in more than a decade, sky-high gasoline prices, and rising food prices are all taking their toll. As a result, many people are finding themselves mired in credit card debt.

As they find it increasingly difficult to make ends meet, people are turning to credit to make up for the shortfalls in their bank accounts. However, credit comes with a steep price tag attached-huge interest rates, coupled with fees for paying late and going over the credit card limit.

A number of Americans are simply making minimum payments on their credit cards. As a result, they could be facing credit card bills for years-if not decades-to come.

In order to pay mounting credit card debt, some individuals are turning to their retirement accounts. Others are giving up and filing for bankruptcy. The problem is so bad that some individuals have debts which are greater than a year’s pay.

At times, individuals may turn to convenience checks to pay their mortgages. As a result, they are piling up thousands of dollars in credit card bills. The problem is intensified by the fact that many individuals are unable to save, meaning that they have no security net when tough times come.

Credit experts recommend a two-fold strategy for dealing with financial problems. They say it’s wise to attempt to increase savings and, at the same time, attack your problems with credit card . That may mean quite a bit of penny-pinching, but experts say that it’s entirely worth it in the end.

The nation’s housing mess, which is being blamed for many financial problems, is not expected to be alleviated until at least the middle of 2009.
