For many families, vacations are a just not a possibility. Facing mounting debt and staving off foreclosure a vacation just seems like an expense that is just not affordable.

However, with some compromises and searching, it is possible to take that vacation without seeing your credit score drop anymore.

The trick is to vacation close to home.

The current state of the economy has several families rethinking their lifestyle choices. Right now, vacationing out of state or traveling abroad is no longer a possibility. So, now is the time to discover the rich attractions located just minutes away from your own home.

More and more families are choosing this cheap alternative over charging hundreds of dollars on gas and expenses.

Staying home is a great idea instead of spending time in hotels and resorts. Plan special events centered on a vacation theme and allow special exceptions to make the experience feel more like a vacation and less like an extended weekend.

Search around your area for parks, reserves, and other places to go for free.

If you do want to get out then search for hotels offering special deals. The current economy is hitting these establishments hard and in an effort to combat low attendance hotels are giving deals to guests. Some of these deals can include reimbursement for the gas that it took to get to the hotel. With gas prices hovering just below $4.00 a gallon such deals look very appealing.

Of course, if you must travel somewhere then start saving immediately. Try not to use your credit cards for vacations as this is certainly not an emergency. Using your tax rebate check from the stimulus plan passed by President Bush is a good idea since the money will be going towards an American industry.

There is absolutely no need to rack up debt while on vacation. Even though you feel that you deserve a break, and you certainly do, don’t ruin everything you worked for with one trip.
