Debt Relief Options

It would be kind of funny if it weren’t such a serious matter. It’s beginning to pop up more and more frequently in these days of rising costs on everything from gasoline to bottled water. People who have some serious debt are simply going through their day to day routine pretending that the problem doesn’t exist!

This is about the worst thing you can do when you are having a problem paying your bills. Once these people realize that their debts are not going to go away, the problem has gotten even more serious than it was to start with. Ignoring monthly statements has caused late fees to stack up along with past due payments, and you could be deep in debt within a very short time.

If you are one of those people who hoped and prayed their debt problem would just magically disappear, you’ve come to realize that there is no magic wand that you can wave to make your finances correct themselves. You need some proven methods to help you manage your debts and resurrect your credit rating, which dips a degree or two every time a late payment is reported to the credit bureau.

Obviously, you have to pay your past due bills. The first order of business is to call the credit card company and see if you can extract a glimmer of sympathy from the customer service representative. The odds of this are not great, but it doesn’t hurt to try.

Tell the representative that you had a period of bad luck, and you realize you are behind on your bill, but you want to get caught up again. He or she will probably quote you a lump sum amount that can be paid in full to bring your account up to date. This is where a little negotiation can be fruitful. Credit card companies have been known to shave a little off of this amount permanently, saving you some cash which you can put toward another bill.

If it would be difficult or impossible for you to pay a lump sum payment, be honest and tell the customer service representative this. Mention again that you are serious about getting your account up to date, and that it would be better for your situation if you made payments. The representatives have the ability to add your past due balance to your monthly payments in small amounts each month, allowing you to get caught up almost painlessly, albeit slowly, but they do this at their own discretion.

This is why it can pay off for you to be unfailingly polite when you call the credit card company! Remember, that person on the other end of the phone can be a great help to your financial situation.
